Job Description: The Disability Determination Services (DDS) is a Division of the Department for Income Support. The DDS assists and determines eligibility for Social Security Administration Disability benefits for the citizens in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. DDS Adjudicators request, obtain and review medical evidence to determine the severity of medical conditions. The DDS is 100% funded by the Social Security Administration, this means it is a position that is paid entirely as a result of federal monies. The duration of employment is determined on the 12-month probationary period. An employee appointed to an FFTL position is required to meet the minimum requirements for the classification. Further, an FFTL position is designated as an unclassified (non-merit) employee. FFTL employees are eligible to receive benefits at the same level as a classified (merit) employee. Job Responsibilities: Undertakes extensive training to develop skills needed for the adjudication of Social Security Administration disability claims. Learns basic human anatomy and medical information about disease processes, medical nomenclature and terminology, diagnostic studies and procedures/tests. Studies the Social Security Act with a major focus on Title II, Title XVI and amendments, Social Security rulings and federal regulations pertaining to medical, vocational and legal standards for disability. With assistance from the peer trainer, determines eligibility for disability benefits and prepares a formal explanation of the determination. Current or prior military experience will substitute for the required college on a year for year basis. Prior military experience will only substitute if the individual received an honorable discharge, discharge under honorable conditions, or a general discharge.
