Job Description:

This position is located in the Office of Enforcement Programs and Services, Firearms and Ammunition Technology Division, Firearms Technology Industry Services Branch, Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Position serves as Chief, Firearms Technology and Industry Services Branch that is within the Firearms and Ammunition Technology Division (FATD) located in the Office of Enforcement Programs and Services Directorate.  The FATD branches are responsible for providing industry related technical support and guidance to the Bureau and other Federal law enforcement agencies, States, the firearms and ammunition industry, and the general public.
  • The Branches respond to and act upon law enforcement agencies’ request to test, evaluate, and provide expert testimony and training on firearms and ammunition and are responsible for the full life cycle support of new firearms from procurement to the ultimate destruction or reutilization of abandoned, forfeited, issued or purchased firearms and ammunition.
  • Responsible for planning, developing, directing, evaluating, and coordinating all matters involving the technical aspects of firearms, providing overall guidance, direction and approval over the production, classification, identification, function and evaluations of the weapons affecting the Bureau’s criminal and regulatory enforcement mission.
  •   Position serves as the primary advisor to ATF management and field offices, other Federal or State agencies, foreign governments, domestic or foreign industry, and the public on matters involving the technical aspect of firearms. Directs and oversees the furnishing of technical information to provide direction and uniformity in the firearms technical expertise to the Field Divisions.
  • Exercises full supervisory authority over Branch personnel; assigns, reviews, and evaluates work of employees.
  • Responsible for assessing, developing and evaluating program goals, needs operations and accomplishments for the branch; conducts short- and long-range projects that involve studies and initiatives pertaining to branch programs, functions and operations.
  • Directs branch staff in testing and evaluating domestic firearms, ammunition, and implements of war; in monitoring, compiling and evaluating domestic firearms manufacture and exportation statistics; and maintaining the ATF technical reference library.

Job Requirements:

  • Pass drug screening and subject to random drug test.
  • Time in Grade requiremnt must be met by the closing date of the vacancy.
  • May be required to serve a 1-year probationary period.
  • Required to sign a mobility agreement as a condition of employment.

Qualification & Experience:

  • Minimum of three years of service as an ATF Firearms Enforcement Officer.
  • Experience with Firearm and Ammunition Classification as defined by Federal Law.
  • Experience with the Importation Evaluation Classification requirements as defined by Federal Law.
  • Experience with Classroom Instruction.
  • Experience with criminal evidence and chain of custody requirements.
